2020 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2020 Mazda3: Two sedans that focus on fun

The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta and the 2020 Mazda3 are known for their driving pleasure more than anything else. Indeed, the two compact sedans offer dynamic handling, high performance, powerful engines and surprising agility. In return, none of this comes at the expense of efficiency, safety, or comfort.

That said, when it’s time to choose between the two, which model is the best buy? If you want to combine driving pleasure with refinement, the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta is probably the better option of the two.

More efficient engines in the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta

The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta offers two high-performance engines, starting with a 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that develops 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This engine offers more power than the Mazda3’s 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, and because it uses turbocharging, it is also faster than the most powerful engine in the Mazda3 range, which develops 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This engine is certainly one of the most efficient in the segment, but it cannot compete with the Jetta’s engine in terms of accelerations.

The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta is also more economical with an average fuel consumption rating of just 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway. Again, the Mazda3 also offers great efficiency, but it’s not nearly as economical as the Jetta with an average fuel consumption rating of 8.7 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway.

We can’t forget the sporty Volkswagen GLI 2020, either. The latter offers 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. No model in the Mazda3 range can compete with the Jetta GLI.

We should also mention that the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta offers a trunk that can accommodate more than 400 liters, a rare occurrence in the compact segment. Ultimately, the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta is more spacious than the Mazda3 both in the trunk and in the seats.
